Kenya Forest Service
The Kenya Forest Service was gazetted on 1st February 2007; through the Forest Act 2005. Hence KFS began its operations on 1st February2007 followed by the Board of Management that was gazetted with effect from 2nd February 2007.Kenya Forest Service is a parastatal that was created in February 2007, and succeeds the former Forest Department under the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources with the Forest Act 2005, coming into effect on the 2nd February 2007. The main KFS functions include conserving, managing of forests with the aim of increasing the forest cover.

To enhance conservation and sustainable management of forests and allied resources for environmental stability and social-economic development

MANDATE

To contribute to the growth of the natural resource sector by enhancing development, conservation and management of all forest resources base in the country. This entails ensuring an increasing supply of forest products and services for meeting the basic need of the present and future generation

 KENYA FOREST SERVICE MANAGEMENT

KFS has a 16 Member Board of Directors .At the management level, KFS is headed by a Director. There is Senior Deputy Director and 4 Deputy Directors. There are Heads of Departments, Heads of Conservancies Senior Forestry Officers as Heads of Divisions AND Forest Managers and Extension Services providers at station levels.

KFS STAFF

  • KFS has a total of about 5500 staff countrywide
  • 430 are based in the head quarters.
  • There are 693 foresters countrywide; the foresters are either diploma or degree holders out of which 87 are based in Nairobi
  • KFS has about 2600 Forest Rangers based at different stations country wide majority of who are KCSE Grade C holders.
  • KFS headquarters and Nairobi Conservancy has about 50 subordinate staff who are basically form four leavers.
  • About 60 percent of KFS staff are between the ages of 35 to 50 years and about 30 percent of the staff are between the ages of 18 to 35 years.
