On Saturday, June 6, 2009 from 8.30am, Kenya Wildlife Service in collaboration with Hell’s Gate National Park Stakeholders Management Committee invites Kenyans from all walks of life to participate and celebrate the inaugural “To Hell’s Gate on a Wheelbarrow”.

This is a fun-cum- fundraising event combining conservation, sports and health.

WHY THE EVENT?

Hell’s Gate National Park faces a number of challenges. Key among them is that it is home to over 67,000 wild animals with less than 5% of these animals permanently based in the protected area.  The resultant effect has been an increase in illegal game meat trade, human encroachment and loss of habitat, conflict in land use, land sub division and fencing, leading to human-wildlife conflict. To address most of these issues, it is important that KWS works with the surrounding communities whose land is vital for the survival of wildlife.  The park stakeholders considered having a fun-cum- fundraising event dubbed, “To Hell’s Gate on a Wheelbarrow” to provide an avenue for engagement.

OUR TARGET

To raise Kshs. 5 million to equip a conservation centre which will help mobilise and educate members of the surrounding communities whose land is vital for the survival of wildlife. This will help to ensure a vibrant outreach programme assisting them to start economic enterprises as well as help to reduce the human-wildlife conflicts, thus ensuring the wildlife is conserved.
