Politics

-  1983 – First Unsuccessful attempt Parliamentary candidate, Kitale West Constituency.

-  1985 – 1993  - Elected Treasurer of Kenya African Union (KANU) Trans Nzoia   Branch.

-  1988 – 1992 - Elected Member of Parliament, Kwanza Constituency.

·         Appointed Assistant Minister, Ministry of Agriculture & Livestock Development. 

-  1993 -1996  - Elected KANU Chairman of Trans Nzoia Branch. 

-  1996  - Defected to Ford Kenya. 

-  1997 - Presidential Campaign Manager of the Late Vice President Hon. Michael   Wamalwa. 

-  2000 - Elected Member of Parliament for Kwanza (A By – Election) 

-  2000 – To Date – Director of Elections Ford Kenya Party.

-  2001 – I was part of a Parliamentary / Civil Society Team of 12 who founded The National Alliance for Change (NAC)

·         NAC represented 7 founding political parties.

-  2002 - Elected as Chairman of the Coordinating Committee of NAC.

·         NAC transformed itself into a Party called National Alliance Party of Kenya comprising of 14 oppositional Political Parties.

 -  June 2002 – Sept. 2002

Acted as Chairman of the Council of National Alliance Party of Kenya.

 -  Sept. 2002 – Appointed by party Political Leaders to be one of the 10 Elders to create a mechanism of uniting Rainbow Alliance and National Party of Kenya.

 -  Oct. 2002 - Formation of National Rainbow Coalition (NARC)

·         Elected Co-Chairman of a Combined Coordinating Committee representing NAK and the Late Hon. Job Omino representing Rainbow Alliance (LDP)

 - Oct. 2002- December 2002 – Member of NARC SUMMIT with Hon. Mwai Kibaki as Chairman of the Summit and Hon. Moody Awori as the Vive Chairman.

As Co- Chairman of the coordinating Committee and sitting as a member of the Summit, I was instrumental  in putting Election structures and processes in motion using the party organ (NARC) and the Election Board to mount a successful General Election which formed the present government led by H.E President  Hon. Mwai Kibaki.

 - 2003 – Appointed Chairman of Parliamentary Committee of Agriculture,

Environment and Natural Resources.

 July 2005- TO DATE- Appointed Assistant Minister, Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Development.

 December 2005 – Appointed Minister for Science and Technology

 February 2006 – Appointed Acting Minister, Ministry of Education for one year.  I retained the Ministry of Science and Technology portfolio.

 April 2008 – Appointed Minister for Forestry and Wildlife to-date.

 

Coalition Work

19th - 27th April 2002  - Harare.

·         I was invited by the President of Movement for Change (MDC) Hon. Morgan Changirai to assess the capacity of MDC Structures and Personnel while preparing for the 2005 General Elections.

13th – 17th May 2002

·         A second visit to witness the Lupane Constituency By – Election in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

·         I appreciated the extent of President Mugabe’s repression machinery in operation during a By – Election.

August 2003

·          I was part of a 3-man delegation (NARC, FORD People and KANU) to the House of Commons  - Britain to meet British Party and Parliamentary Leaders to discuss matters regarding Coalition and Democracy in developing countries.

March 2004 – (One week)

·         I was invited by International Republican Institute (IRI) to go to Malawi as a Resource person on coalition building. All political parties in Malawi attended the Seminar.

17th – 24th May 2004

·         I was invited by International Republican Institute (IRI) to give a lecture to the Political Parties in Jakarta, Indonesia. A prelude to the Presidential Election held this year

Hobbies

1972 – 1976

·         Motor Rallying  - Participated in 3 safari Rallies (The East African Safari Rally) and one in Zambia (The Zambian National Safari Rally)

1986 – 1988

·         Lawn Tennis – An accomplished club player and became Chairman of Kenya Lawn Tennis Association

·         I also coached my son Paul Wekesa who became the first Kenyan to win an Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) ranking list in 1998.
